Over recent years, the demand for civil celebrants in Australia has grown with a recognisable shift from traditional church ceremonies to the more personal and flexible option of civil ceremonies.

HOW TO BECOME A MARRIAGE CELEBRANT

Besides having the right personal qualities to carry out the role, you must become qualified. This requires completion of a Certificate IV in celebrancy. This Certificate IV course is offered by Get Skilled Aus. It will provide you with all the information you need to know about the processes and procedures associated with marriage celebrancy.

Once you have completed the Certificate IV in marriage celebrancy, you will be required to apply to the Attorney General’s department for a celebrant’s licence. They will assess your suitability based upon whether you have any criminal history or conflicts of interest. They will also make enquiries about your standing in the community

Once you have been approved by the registrar, you can apply for an ABN if you plan on issuing clients with invoices.

WHAT DOES A Celebrant Course COST?

Get Skilled Aus has a range of options for course completion. We are able to work out a payment plan to suit your needs.

When you are ready to apply for a licence, you will need to pay the Australian Government a $600 fee. Renewal of your registration costs $240 annually.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAME-SEX & HETEROSEXUAL COUPLE’S CEREMONIES?

In a word – no. The amendments to marriage ceremony requirements are mandatory in all marriage celebrations. There are no divisive parameters designed to separate heterosexual and same-sex marriages.

What is the MARRIAGE CELEBRANCY LICENSE RENEWAL fee?

Besides requiring your annual fee of $240, the Australian Government insists that celebrants complete at least five hours of ongoing professional development annually with a registered training organisation.
